How to Choose the Material and Mold for Metal Spinning?

   22 Oct,2021

Commonly used Metal Spinning Materials:

Many metal materials are used for metal spinning, such as aluminum, steel, copper, titanium, stainless steel, etc. We choose metal plates and pipes as spinning billets. The plates can be divided into cold-rolled and hot-rolled, and the hardness of hot-rolled plates is different than cold-rolled. The board is low, but it is more prone to cracking due to internal porosity and shrinkage. To understand the metal spinning performance of different materials, the following will introduce the material characteristics and the application in spinning forming.

Material Characteristics and its Application in Spinning Forming:

Through practice, we have found that aluminum, copper and steel are easier to form than titanium and stainless steel, because ductility is an important feature of metal spinning, and the work hardening of all materials is obvious. Metal spinning makes the material stronger when spinning. Rebound has an effect on accuracy, the hardness is low, and the surface of the spinning product is better. Now I will introduce some metal characteristics of metal spinning.

①Hardness: Aluminum (except alloy aluminum)

②Ductility: Aluminum (except alloy aluminum)>Copper>Brass>Steel>Stainless steel>Titanium

The ductility is poor, the elongation is small, and it is easier to crack during the metal spinning process. Due to poor ductility, you can see fatigue marks in stainless steel and titanium.

③Tensile strength: aluminum (except alloy aluminum)

If the tensile strength is high, a greater spinning force is required to form the product, so a powerful spinning machine is required for processing, and the machine wears quickly.

④Internal stress: aluminum (except alloy aluminum)

Internal stress will make the material rebound and affect the accuracy, so the precision of stainless steel and titanium spinning is poor.

How to Choose the Material of the Spinning Mold?

The spinning die material uses 45# steel, cast steel and CR12 steel.

① If the spinning product needs to ensure accuracy, and the blank material is stainless steel or titanium, CR12 steel should be selected as the mold material, because 45# has low hardness and poor wear resistance, and the size will be smaller during processing. The mold has been in use for some time.

② To obtain a good spinning surface, CR12 steel should be selected as the mold, because cr12 steel can be polished into a mirror surface, and the inner surface of the spinning product is close to the mold surface.

③If the blank of the spinning product is aluminum and copper, 45# steel can be selected as the mold material, because the price of Cr12 is more expensive than 45# steel.

④If the size of the spinning product is too large, cast steel should be used as the mold, because cast steel can save material costs.

How to Choose the Material of the Spinning Roller?

The material of the spinning roller is high-speed steel and CR12 steel.

If it rotates aluminum and copper, cr12 steel can be used.

Such as spinning stainless steel, steel, titanium, the use of cr12 as the roller material is easy to wear, which affects the surface quality of the spinning product. High-speed steel has high hardness and reduces erosion.
